Do you work in a sedentary job and find it difficult to keep your energy levels up or just want to be more active throughout your workday? We’ve put together some top tips that are both simple and effortless to integrate into your daily-routine - which in turn will assist you on the road to improving your overall activity and productivity levels.
1. Move regularly
Set a timer and ensure that you move every hour; whether that’s to get outside for a breath of fresh air, walk down to the canteen or the local café for a coffee, or even just walk to your colleague’s desk rather than sending an email. Moving regularly is good for your health!
We already know that sitting for 8+ hours a day isn’t great for your activity levels or your posture: you stiffen up, slouch and get tired quicker; and as mentioned in our last blog; it’s not great for your productivity levels either.
Take a break to clear your head; move your limbs and you’ll be refreshed and ready to tackle your work!
Ensure that you stretch at least every 30 minutes. Stretching out your chest and spine can help reduce back and neck pain, especially if you are slouching at a desk all day.
You could even take it up a notch and get an adjustable standing desk – perfect for when you need to stretch and loosen those limbs. They can also improve your health, so why not give it a go?
3. Make the most of your lunch-break
Go for a walk or head to the gym on your lunch-break; the fresh air will wake you up and you’ll be ready to tackle the afternoon rather than sinking into the midday slump. Taking advantage of your lunch-break is good for your activity levels as well as your mental health and well-being. What’s more, you’ll feel great afterwards.
If you’re struggling to find time to exercise, track your steps with a pedometer and you’ll soon find that you’ll be walking more as you try to reach your targets.
You can also incorporate small things like taking the stairs rather than the elevator and parking that bit further from the office and walking.
4. Watch what you eat
Bring your own lunch and healthy snacks to work. We all get cravings, especially in the afternoon, so ensure you bring something healthy to nibble on that will keep you full.
Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated; water can help you stay full and keep you alert throughout the day, thus leaving you with more energy at the end of your workday in preparation for more actives, whether that is a gym session or an evening run!
